Since 2008 Seven Against has released three artist-made EP’s: Demo 1 (2009), Nothing Remains (2010) and III (2012) and two singles Stand the Flames (2013) and Bleach (2014). The music is usually categorized as alternative metal but to describe the essence of Seven Against better, they are all about great and grooving guitar riffs, metal influenced playing and raw but yet catchy vocals. Even though the lyrics are a bit on the dark side, the songs tell about everyday life that everyone can relate to.
The story of Seven Against began when former Coredust singer Toni replied to the band’s ad. It was a match from the start and the unique Seven Against sound was completed. In the beginning of 2009 guitarist Juha decided to concentrate on other projects leaving the group. This did not slow down the enthusiasm but quite the opposite. Shortly after the band played their debut gig and released the first demo (Demo1, released in April 2009). The feedback was positive receiving 4/5 stars from several review critics. The reception for all the recordings have been positive and Nothing Remains was even voted one of the best demos of 2010 by Olli Rinnekangas at Imperiumi.net with praising words:
“Seven Againsts Nothing Remains -MCD is better than its predecessor (Demo1) in every way. Nothing Remains rely on the same rock influenced alternative metal. The straight forward but catchy tunes endure listening very well. The guitar riffs are grooving and the vocal melodies vivid keeping things really interesting. It will be thrilling to see what Seven Against’s future endeavors will be because with this release they truly challenge their American counterparts”.
In 2012 while recording III Seven Against entered the Emergenza Festival where they were nominated the best act by the other contenders at the Finnish finals at Nosturi in Helsinki. The success in the competition delayed the recording process and III was finally released in December the same year.
In 2013 encountered its second change in lineup when one of the founding members Janne Gustafsson was replaced by JP Immonen (former bands Pentatonik, At Winters End, Hammerhed and Soulgrind). As proof of the capabilities of the new lineup Seven Against recorded and released a digital single Stand The Flames. The work on a full length album begun in 2014 and the first single Bleach was released 17.6.2014. The debut album Beneath The Shell was released 6.11.2014.
”We wanted to make the best album possible. We had the option to only introduce new material on the album, but we felt that some of the older songs deserved to be on the album as well.
The whole recording process was a pain in the butt and we learned a lot the hard way. E.g. some parts where recorded several times because the equipment and software didn’t always work as planned.
We still pulled it off and did a great album. All songs fit in nicely, they sound great both as individual tracks and as a full length album and this is something to be really proud of” -says lead singer Toni Palmumaa of the recording process.
The album was recorded and produced by Seven Against and the mixing was done at Studio Kekkonen by Mikko Raita who has been related to such names as Apocalyptica, Sunrise Avenue and Von Hertzen Brothers.
In many occasions the music is often categorized as alternative metal but to describe the essence of Seven Against better, they are all about great and grooving guitar riffs, metal influenced playing and raw but yet catchy vocals. The music takes you literally deeper beneath the shell.
